CBS MOBILE RELEASES “EYEMOBILE” CITIZEN JOURNALISM APPLICATION FOR iPHONE

CBS First Broadcast Network to Release Application the Enables Users to Report News On-The-Go

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 — CBS Mobile today announced it has released its EyeMobile iPhone application making CBS the first broadcast network to launch an application enabling users to become personal broadcasters as they upload, view and comment on photos and videos. The EyeMobile application, built by Treemo Labs, is now available, free of charge, at the iTunes App Store (Get the EyeMobile App).

The EyeMobile application offers the full functionality of CBSEyeMobile.com which launched earlier this year. Using the iPhone camera, users can capture and upload photos to the CBS EyeMobile site where they can view and rate reports and interact with other EyeMobile on-the-go journalists. After submitting information, EyeMobile application users can update their report, track the report’s number of views, and engage in discussions with members of the EyeMobile community.

“We are very excited to be able to bring a cutting edge application to iPhone and iPod Touch users,” said Jeff Sellinger, Executive Vice President and General Manager, CBS Mobile. “Soon we will be able to broadcast anything live from the street, essentially becoming walking televisions. This application enables any iPhone user to report news from their hometown or wherever they are. It also allows users to engage in non-filtered reporting from real people. The EyeMobile application is the best of both worlds.”

The EyeMobile application was developed for CBS Mobile by Seattle based Treemo Labs (TreemoLabs). Dedicated to providing real-time social media solutions, Treemo Labs created EyeMobile as an application that equally encompassed personal broadcasting and social media. The EyeMobile application enables users to report and read news in addition to engaging with other EyeMobile application users.

“The CBS EyeMobile application for iPhone and iPod Touch sets a new standard for social media, citizen journalism and the iPhone,” said Brent Brookler, CEO, Treemo Labs. “We are happy to have a partner like CBS Mobile pushing the envelope on technology while keeping the consumer experience front and center.”

The EyeMobile iPhone Application is now available, free of charge, in the iTunes App Store. EyeMobile is the first application from a broadcast network offering users the ability to become personal broadcasters by uploading, viewing and commenting on photos and videos live, from anywhere.

Social Media on the iPhone with Treemo

UPDATE: The Treemo iPhone web application was chosen as an Apple “Staff Pick”!

This post was written by Josh Schumacher, the lead developer on the iPhone web application.

Content Item Page on the iPhone showing the Pirate Baby

I have finally gotten my chance to dedicate time and energy into making an iPhone optimized web application for Treemo.com. It started as a quick project in which I was just going to utilize iUI by Joe Hewitt, but after starting implementation with iUI, I realized we needed more. Content Item Fullscreen on Treemo.com iPhone App iUI is a great quick start library to get something off the ground but I wanted to make more than the average cliche iPhone interface.

So was born this interface. Since Treemo is a social media site, the design is all about the media while still giving room to interact with the media. On the content item page, I display the image as large as possible (utilizing the entire screen when the image is the same aspect ratio) while still giving you all the controls you need to comment on the item, view the user’s profile, stats about item, etc.

Rotating the Treemo.com iPhone app into Landscape Mode

The entire application behaves as expected when you rotate the phone, a grid that is four images wide in portrait mode will fluidly become six images across in landscape mode. A landscape image on the content item page will fill the screen when you flip the phone from portrait to landscape. The login form will re-arrange the form elements to better fit depending on your orientation. It all just works.

Another interesting element I developed for the Treemo iPhone optimized web app was a lightbox interface The new Lightbox View invented for the Treemo.com iPhone Web Application to display content and forms above the current page you are on without leaving the page. When browsing a grid of images, you can click on one and it will show you a larger version of the image and some details about it, allowing you to then choose if you want to go to the content item page to see it bigger, comment on it, mark it as a favorite, etc.

This was a huge project and I consider the outcome a success. I couldn’t have finished this release without the support from our awesome designer Brent Gariano to add some artsy fartsy touches. With an initial release, there’s always bound to be some bugs so if you find any, let me know. I have a huge list of new features and enhancements I want to implement in the next iteration. Seeing how there will be a next iteration, get in touch if you use this awesome iPhone web app. I’ll try and hook you up with some swag if you donate ideas that help this become the next big thing.

To view the awesome new iPhone web application, hit up Treemo.com from your iPhone or iPod touch. Don’t forget to add it as a web clip to your home screen for easy and quick access.

Catching Up

Apologies for the delay in updates.

We have been busy working hard on Treemo.com and other sites that we have built.  Recently, on Treemo.com, you may have noticed the ‘Bulk Upload’ button appearing next to the ‘upload’ button.  This is our new ‘flash’ upload tool that we launched in the last few weeks.  This allows users to upload as many files as they want and all different files in one, easy-to-use page/application.  We have other uses for this that will be coming soon, so please have a play with it.  Also, please notice the sound it makes when you’re finished uploading.

Comments ‘paginated’ on mobile.  We just pushed out over the weekend a new way to show comments on multiple pages.   While we really like all the comments on one page, some of our users on older phones were having issues with our most commented items.  We are exploring different ways to put comments on items as we want the conversations to continue to flow.  We have always ordered comments with most recent last (well we actually tried most recent first for a couple of days), but with ‘paginated’ comments it can break up the flow, we’re pushing out another fix for this later today and hope it works out for you all.

We have several new features coming in the next few weeks, so please come back and check it out.

Alicia Keys Teams with Treemo to Keep a Child Alive

We recently launched (and announced) our innovative promotion with Alicia Keys and Keep a Child Alive. See below for widgets and banners - contest end February 28, 2008.

Here is the release:

KEYS LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE “AS I AM” MOBILE CONTEST TO SUPPORT A GOOD CAUSE AND CELEBRATE SUPERWOMEN AROUND THE WORLD

Seattle - JANUARY 29, 2008 - Multi-Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, producer, actress and philanthropist Alicia Keys recently partnered with Seattle-based Treemo (http://www.treemo.com) to launch the innovative “As I Am” contest, a mobile and web contest to support the Keep A Child Alive (KCA) charity. The contest directly benefits KCA as Treemo will donate $1 to the cause for every unique user who enters the “As I Am” contest, up to $10,000.

Keys is the Global Ambassador for Keep a Child Alive, a charity providing an urgent response to the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa. KCA provides comprehensive AIDS care to over 20,000 people living with AIDS; including provision of life-saving AIDS medications, nutritional support and treatment for AIDS-related illnesses. They also provide care and support to thousands of children who have lost their parents from this devastating disease. KCA uses 100% of public donations for the cause, a fact very few charities can honestly claim.

“This contest and Treemo’s support will not only increase our ability to spread the word about the realities of this pandemic, but also recruit more potential donors who can easily see they can indeed save the life of someone who needs their help. It’s only $1 a day to sustain a life; it’s time we all start giving a buck,” said Leigh Blake, Founder and President of KCA. For more information about Keep A Child Alive, visit http://www.keepachildalive.org/

The “As I Am” contest celebrates the third track on the album titled “Superwoman” by allowing fans to create a Treemo.com account at http://alicia.treemo.com and upload via their mobile phone or web, a photo, video, or text, telling a story about someone they know who is a “Superwoman.” Since launching, the contest has generated over a thousand entries from throughout the US, each full of rich personal stories of courage, admiration, and heart-felt nominations.

“Keep A Child Alive’s mission is to empower and inspire people to act and save lives. Now my fans can share with me in real-time, from anywhere anytime, their own personal stories of empowerment and help support KCA’s efforts,” said Alicia Keys.

At http://alicia.treemo.com, users may browse all the contest entries, receive updates on Alicia’s favorites, and download ring tones of her hit tracks “No One” and “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” from her number one multi-platinum selling album As I Am.

The contest will be promoted via a nationwide Top 40 radio campaign in major urban markets, from KKDA in Dallas to KUBE in Seattle to WJMN in Boston and more. Each of these radio stations will review the contest entries and select three winners to receive an iPod Touch and an As I Am CD signed by Keys. Each station will then choose three semi-finalists to compete for the grand prize concert trip giveaway to see Alicia Keys on tour in the United States. Fans may text ALICIA to 873366 to receive contest news and view the latest entries via their mobile phones. Entries for the “As I Am” contest must be received at http://alicia.treemo.com by February 28, 2008. For complete Contest Rules, visit http://alicia.treemo.com/static/contest_rules

Treemo’s platform allows these artists to promote their brand and social causes with powerful social media tools and creative campaigns that reward fans for participating in the artist’s community.”
